So we decided to take a trip out to a NASA event for a day at NJMP Park (lighting track).
We arrived at midnight on a Friday; just parked the GX and trailer and went to bed. The morning started out great, got the car off the trailer and proceeded to set up to get ready to get on track with Travis, Evan, Tom, and Brandy. But, she does Honda challenge with NASA, which is wheel to wheel, so we were just at the track together.
I was super excited to get on an obtuse track, since the last time we ran was at pine mountain down in Kentucky. We went out and made one lap, just to feel out the track. The second lap, we went a bit faster to get the tires and brakes nice and heated up for our hot lap. As we proceeded to go down the front straight at about 120mph to start out the hot lap, we noticed a scrapping sound. We didn’t think much of it because we figured it was the splitter under load while braking. Sure enough, it was the splitter. By the middle to the end of our hot lap, we got black flagged because the car was making way too many sparks due to the titanium skid blocks. We came off course and they told us what the issue was.
We went back to the paddock and started to think about how we could adjust the splitter height without raising the car from the coils; because we didn’t have the spanner wrenches with us. We tapped up the bumper and tried our next session out and got the same result. So, once that happened, we knew we had other issues besides just the splitter clearance from the ground. We just decided to not go on, but on top of that, we were not a 100% feeling well. It turns out we had a fever and it was 90 degrees out, well close to a hundred. Takeaway from that day was that we had some much needed tuning to do to the car in terms of suspension splitter, clearance, and mounting points for the front bumper, which have to be added. All in all, we are thankful we went out that day because we found issues that really could’ve hindered our performance for the up coming events. But, we will keep you guys updated on the improvements we make. Thanks for joining us for another short recap.
